District Submits for $2.5MM Illinois Park and Recreational Facility Construction (PARC) Grant Application

February 19, 2014 – At the Illinois Association of Park Districts and Illinois Parks & Recreation Association’s Conference held on January 24, 2014, Governor Patrick Quinn
announced in person the release of $25MM for the Illinois Park and Recreational Facility Construction (PARC) grant program.

The PARC grant program was created by Public Act 096-0820 effective November 18, 2009 to provide grants to be disbursed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to eligible local governments for park and recreation unit construction projects. A park or recreation unit construction project means the acquisition, development, construction, reconstruction, rehabilitation, improvements, architectural planning, and installation of capital facilities consisting of but not limited to: buildings, structures, and land for park and recreation purposes, open spaces and natural areas. Applicants can request up to a maximum of $2.5MM to offset project costs.

President Fred Hohnke stated, “The Park District identified this grant opportunity from project conception in order to seek alternative funding to reduce the overall financing amount needed to fund the project as well as provide a superior recreational facility that meets the recreational, health & wellness, sport, social and civic needs of the community. The timing of the grant program sync’s well with the planning of the ARC.”

Preparation for the grant has been ongoing over the past few years in anticipation of the grant release. Executive Director Mike Adams stated, “This year’s program will be extremely competitive, but based on the extensive amount of local planning and support from the community and in partnership with the Village of Woodridge over the past few years, the District is confident the ARC application will rank well.” Notification of the grant award is expected to take several months.
