Stu Vanorny Selected as the 2017 Coach of the Year
November 8, 2017 - Woodridge Park District recently honored Stu Vanorny as the 2017 Coach of the Year for his commitment to coaching a variety of youth sports in Woodridge. Stu began coaching for the Park District in 2012 as an in-house soccer coach for the Woodridge Soccer Association. He later committed to coaching his son’s Woodridge Storm travel soccer team, which he has coached for the last three years. To add to his coaching credentials, Stu also became a baseball coach for the Woodridge Athletic Association and a basketball and flag football coach for Park District leagues this year.
Growing up, Stu participated in sports with coaches who he looked up to and who also made a positive impact on his life. That’s why he became a coach himself; to make a positive impact on his children’s and others’ lives.
“I try to stress to the kids that a mistake is just an opportunity to improve,” said Stu. “If you focus on the players’ individual growth, everything else follows. All of the wins and losses eventually fade away, but knowing that each player was out there giving it his or her all is what it’s all about to me.”
Special recognition also goes to Woodridge Park District volunteer coaches Evette Abarca, Mike Ermitage, Joe Schrimpl, Dave Zurawski, Jon Rakers, Vladen Stojanovic, Ben Lauzon, Richard Davey, Chris Hammer and Gary Hunter, who also were nominated for the award.
